محور دراستنا- هنا- هو الشخصية المصرية، وليس المصريون، أو شخصية مصر، أو الحياة اليومية للمصريين. الشخصية المصرية بوصفها بنية سيكلوجية ذات خصائص وملامح وسمات معينة؛ ونحن نفهم هذه البنية السيكولوجية بوصفها محصلة مجموعة من أنساق القيم والمعايير والاتجاهات ورؤى العالم؛ تكونت وتطورت في سياق تاريخي يعج بتفاعل العديد من القوى السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية، وأن هذا التاريخ قد شكل دائماً القاعدة التي ولدت صعيداص ثقافياً وفكرياً وأيديولوجياً، كان بدوره المعين غير الناضب لبناء الشخصية المصرية وتكونها؛ لإستمرارها وتحولها. إننا نفهم الشخصية المصرية إذن بوصفها بنية سيكلوجية ثقافية تاريخية، بهذا المعنى. وليس باعتبارها كياناً طبيعياً موروثاً ثابتاً وأبدياً بغض النظر عن التاريخ بكل ما تحمله من معنى. وبهذا المعنى أيضاً فإن هذه البنية تستجيب لما يطرا على المجتمع من تغيرات وتحولات في عناصرها المختلفة بدرجات متفاوتة، كما تعكس أيضاً جمود العلاقات الإجتماعية التاريخية وركودها في الوقت ذاته والشخصية المصرية بهذا المعنى يستحيل تفسيرها فس ذاتها أو في ضوء أي نظرة تحليلية عرقية وعنصرية، أو في إطار العناصر الثابتة كالجغرافيا والمناخ فقط دون ربط أو رد إلى التفاعلات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية الحية والمتفاعلة وهي ما نعنيه هنا بالتاريخ.
