فالتحنيط هو أحد الإنجازات العلمية التي قدمها المصري القديم للبشرية جمعاء والتي تشهد له مومياته الآن، فالتحنيط لغة هو استخدام الحنوط أو الحناط وهو كل طبيب يمنع فساد الجسد تطيبًا له وتحفيفًا لرطوبته. وأقدم مثال للتحنيط هو مومياء الملكة "حتب حرس" زوجة الملك "سنفرو" وأم الملك "خوفو"، والتي عثر على أحشائها محنطة في صندوق من المرمر. كانت تجري عملية التحنيط في مكان خاص يطلق عليه "خيمة الرب" أو "كشك الإله"، وهو مكان التطهير وكانت وظيفة رئيس المحنطين تحظى بتبجيل كبير ويساعده العديد من المحنطين..
ينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى عدة أقسام والعديد من الفصول حيث يحمل الباب الأول عنوان: التحنيط.. مفاهيمه ومصادره وبدايته التاريخية ويتضمن هذا الباب ثلاثة فصول، أما الباب الثانى فيحمل عنوان "تحنيط الإنسان والحيوان– الطرق والأنواع– الوسائل والأدوات" ويشمل هذا الباب على ثلاثة فصول، أما الباب الثاني فيتناول "تطور التحنيط مع تصور نفسي وفلسفي لقيمته، وتعريفه بعلاقته ببعض العلوم والحضارات القديمة ويتضمن هذا الباب أربعة فصول، كما يشتمل الكتاب أيضًا على ملحق خاص بالصور يوضح عملية التحنيط.
