لعل الأهمية الأولى لهذا العمل المترجم من الإنجليزية عن فن الرسم في مصر القديمة، تتركز من أن الدراسة موضوع هذا الكتاب، تعد أول دراسة من نوعها ليس في اللغة العربية فحسب، بل في تاريخ الفنون الإنسانية عامة، وهو تحليل يعرض لتطور تجربة الإنسان القديم في مصر في سعيه نحو أسلوب فني مميز في الرسم، كما يبين العلاقة العضوية بين التطور التاريخي والثقافي العام لهذا الإنسان، وبين التشكيل الخطي والجمالي لفن الرسم الذي وصل إلى مشارف درامية في التعبير يمكن أن تعد انعكاساً لواقع حضاري لعب فيه الفن والفنان خاصة الرسام دوراً رائداً مميزاً في تاريخ الفن الإنساني.
وفي الجزء الأول من الكتاب، قدم "وليم بيك" شرحاً وتحليلاً للتطور التاريخى لفن الرسم المصري القديم، والأدوات التي استخدمها الرسامون المصريون القدماء والنظريات والقوانين والقواعد الفنية التي كانت تتحكم في عمل هؤلاء الفنانين، بالإضافة إلى دراسة تفصيلية للعلاقات البالغة التعقيد التي كانت تربط بين فن الرسم، وفن التصوير، وفنون النحت بأنواعها، وفن الكتابة الهيروجليفية.
أما الجزء الثاني فيتضمن مجموعة من نحو مائة وخمسين صورة بعضها بالألوان، وقد تم تنظيمها وترتيبها طبقاً لتقسيم الفصول التي يتألف منها الكتاب في مجموعة وهي على وجه التحديد: الرجل والمرأة، والصورة الملكية، والآلهة والسماء، والموسيقى والرقص، والرسوم الخيالية، ورسوم الدعابة، ورسوم الصيد والمعارك الحربية، ورسوم الحيوانات، ورسوم العمارة، وقد أرفقت بكل صورة من تلك الصور دراسة تفصيلية وتحليلية مختصرة للجانب التاريخي والجانب التشكيلي الخاص بكل صورة.
