على الرغم من أن ظاهرة التصفيق الجماعي من أكثر الظواهر شيوعًا في جميع أشكال التواصل الجماهيري العربي فإنها لم تحظ حتى نشر هذا الكتاب في عام 2009 باهتمام يُذكر من الباحثين. فهناك حالة من التجاهل شبه التام لها؛ سواء من علماء الاجتماع وعلماء النفس أم من علماء الاتصال والبلاغة. والكتاب الحالي يحاول جذب اهتمام الباحثين نحو الظواهر الاجتماعية واللغوية والبلاغية التي تشيع في مجتمعنا المعاصر، وتمنحه شكله وهويته. خاصة تلك التي تبدو عفوية وطبيعية لا تستدعي للوهلة الأولى تفكيرا عميقا، أو وقفة خاصة كما هو الحال مع ظاهرة التصفيق. فنحن غالبا ما نمارس التصفيق دون وعي مسبق، ودون أن تكون لدينا معرفة فاحصة ودقيقة بوظائفه وأنواعه والآثار التي يمكن أن تترتب عليه. وهو ما يعني أن التصفيق الذي نمارسه قد يشوبه الكثير من السلبيات التي تحتاج إلى الوعي بها. ولا يتأتى هذا الوعي دون الفهم العميق للتصفيق بأبعاده البلاغية والنفسية والاجتماعية والسياسية المختلفة. مثل هذا الفهم ضروري إذا كنا نسعى لتطوير سلوكياتنا التواصلية، وبدونه لا يمكن أن نأمل في تجاوز السلبيات التي تشيع في هذه السلوكيات. ومن هنا جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب الذي يحاول أن يضع بعض سلوكياتنا اليومية موضع النقد والمساءلة، من خلال محاولة فهمها فهما علميًا دقيقًا، أملا في تغيير ما هو سلبي فيها.
