لقد تناولت في هذا الكتاب سبع فئات من فئات التربية الخاصة وهي: فئة ذوي الإعاقة العقلية، وفئة ذوي اضطرابات التوحد، وفئة ذوي صعوبات التعلم، وذوي الموهبة والتفوق العقلي، وفئة ذوي الإعاقة البصرية، وفئة ذوي الإعاقة السمعية وأخيرا فئة ذوي الإعاقة الجسمية والصحية. لقد تم تناول كل فئة في فصل مستقل حيث إن كل يفصل يبدأ بتعريفات الإعاقة وتصنيفاتها ومن ثم الخصائص والسمات، والمظاهر العامة، وأسباب حدوث الإعاقة والاحتياجات بكافة أنواعها لكل إعاقة، وبعد ذلك يتم توضيح المشكلات التي تواجه ذوي الإعاقة وسبل التغلب عليها ونختمها بتوضيح للخدمات الإرشادية المقدمة لهذه الفئة وأساليب الرعاية.
تمر الأسرة عندما تنجب طفلاً من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة بسلسلة من الأزمات والمشكلات وردود الفعل لم تتوقعها أبداً،فالأبوان ليسا مؤهلين، فغالباً ما يعانيان العديد من المشكلات لأن حاجتهما النفسية والانفعالية لا تلبى بطريقة مناسبة، ومن هنا فقد تم إبراز المشكلات الأسرية التي تواجه ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة وبالتالي كان لا بد من التطرق إلى إرشاد اسر ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة ولكل فئة على حدة.
