يشهد العالم اليوم تطوراً واضحاً في مجال تعليم وتنمية الطفل وبناء عقله وفكره إذ أصبح الشغل الشاغل للتربويين وهو الطفل من سن ما قبل المدرسة إلى ما بعد المدرسة، وبنا على ذلك وضعت العديد من الخطط التربوية والتعليمية المنظمة لتعليم الأطفال العاديين عامة والأطفال ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة.
انفرد التربويون لتعديل مناهج الأطفال العاديين حتى تتوافق مع قدرات الأطفال المعاقين وتمكنهم منها وتمكن التربية من تأدية وظيفتها تجاه الأطفال المعاقين شأنهم شأن العاديين، وهنا يتوجب علينا تحديد وظيفة التربية حتى تتحقق من مدى أدائها لدورها بفعالية.
نظراً لخصائص ومميزات الأطفال ذوي الإعاقة العقلية فإنه لا يوجد منهاج أو خطة تدريسية محددة لتعليمهم وتعديل سلوكهم، ومن هنا تبرز الحاجة إلى تطبيق مبادئ تعليمية وسلوكية أساسية خاصة لكل تلميذ تكون قائمة على أساس الاحتياجات الفردية وخصائص التعليم. أي تطوير منهج خاص لكل تلميذ معاق عقلياً، وهذا المنهاج يعرف بإسم البرنامج التربوي الفردي (Individualized Educational Program, IEP) ونجاح التلميذ هو المؤشر على ذلك ومنه نعرف أننا في الطريق الصحيح. وإذا كان التلميذ يصادف ضعفاً أو لا يصادف أي نجاح، حينئذ نعرف أننا بحاجة إلى إعادة النظر في منهج البرنامج التربوي الفردي، وتغيير طرائقنا وأساليبنا لمواجهة احتياجات الأطفال ذوي الإعاقة العقلية، ونطبق المباديء التعليمية والسلوكية الأساسية لهم.
من خلال ما سبق فانه يسعدني أن أقدم للعاملين في مجال تعليم الأطفال ذوي الإعاقة العقلية وطلبة التربية الخاصة – مسار الإعاقة العقلية هذا الكتاب ليكون عونا لهم. ويتميز هذا الكتاب ببساطة الطرح وبأسلوب علمي خال من التعقيد وبعيدا عن التنظير، يقدم خبرات علمية مجربة وفي خطوت علمية منظمة وشاملة.
وفي نهاية الكتاب ارتأيت أن أزوده بقائمتين منفصلتين لمعظم المفردات والمصطلحات التي وردت في متن الكتاب وباللغتين العربية والانجليزية وذلك بهدف إثراء الحصيلة اللغوية عند الطلبة والعاملين في مجال تعليم الأطفال ذوي الإعاقة العقلية.
