حرص المؤرّخون على البحث والتنقيب عن آثار الخوارج من أشعار وخطب ورسائل وغيرها، وفي هذا الإطار يأتي إهتمامهم بالرسالة المنسوبة إلى عبد الله بن إباض، أحد زعماء الخوارج، والموجَّهة إلى الخليفة الأموي: عبد الملك بن مروان لشرخ قضية الثورة ضد الخليفة الراشدي: عثمان بن عفّان، فقد اعتبرها المؤرّخون من أهمّ وثائق الحركة الإباضية التي تتعذر دراسة الجوانب العقائدية لهذه الحركة بدونها.
لكن رغم إدراك المؤرّخين لقيمة الوثيقة وتوظيفهم لبعض المعلومات الواردة فيها في أبحاثهم، فإن الرسالة لم تلق بعد ما يكفي من العناية والإهتمام، وقلّما نجد دراسة تعرّضت لمحتوى الوثيقة بالشرح والتحليل والمقارنة.
لذلك، رأينا من المفيد الرجوع إليها ودراسة محتواها، ومقارنة ما جاء فيها من أخبار بما نجده في المصادر غير الخارجية، للوقوف على قيمة الوثيقة من ناحية، والمساهمة في الجدال الدائر بين المؤرّخين، وخصوصاً المستشرقين منهم، حول نسبها وموثوقيتها من ناحية أخرى.
