ولد جويده في جنوب العراق بمدينة البصرى من عائلة عربية مسيحية، انتقلت فيما بعد إلى بغداد.
معرفة جويده العميقة بالبلاد وأهلها، زودته بنظرة ثاقبة إلى بواطن مجتمع الكرد وسياساتهم.
كذلك شكّل تقصّيه لجذور الحركة القومية الكردية، تحدياً للنظرة السائدة عن الانتفاضات الكردية التي اعتُبرت حوادث معزولة، دوافعها الضائقة الاقتصادية والتململ السياسي.
وعوضاً من ذلك، قدم تفسيراً جديداً لمواقف القوميين الكرد، مبيّناً، بنحو مقنع، كم هو قديم وعميق ما لحق بهم من مظالم.
من خلال هذا التاريخ المعقد والمكثف للحركة القومية الكردية، نستطيع فهم الأوضاع السائدة في عراق اليوم؛ كما أنَّ معالجة جويده الحساسة والدقيقة للمنطقة أضفت على دراسته أهمية معاصرة بالغة.
أسس المرحوم وديع جويده في جامعة إنديانا قسم لغات الشرق الأدنى وآدابها، وعلم فيه.

هذا الكتاب، عمل رائد في حقل الدراسات الكردية، يعرض لنا فيه وديع جويده بحثاً طليعياً ينشر لأول مرة، يتضمن تحليلاً مفصلاً للمراحل الأولى للحركة القومية الكردية، ويقدم إطاراً لفهم تطوراتها اللاحقة.
لم تنشر الأطروحة في حياة وديع جويده لكن سمعتها تناقلتها الألسن، وأقرّ باحثون كثر بأهميتها ليس كدراسة حول نشأة الحركة القومية الكردية فحسب وإنما كأنموذج لفهم تاريخها اللاحق أيضاً. أصبح العمل الآن مرجعاً مكرساً يحيل إليه معظم أشهر الباحثين في هذا الحقل، وسيكون نشره فرصة سانحة ليصل إلى أوسع جمهور، وليُسهِم بصورة أوفى، في فهم هذه الحركة الجيوسياسية والثقافية، وتقدير أهميتها.
