منذ سقوط مملكة ميديا في يدي الملك الفارسي كورش الثاني سنة (550 ق.م)، حُرم الكرد من العيش في دولة كردية تجمع شملهم جميعاً، فأشعلوا، أسلافاً وأحفاداً، ثورةً تلو ثورة، لتأسيس دولتهم المستقلة مثل جيرانهم العرب والفرس والأرمن والترك، ولا يزال كفاحهم في هذا المجال مستمراً. وقد تناول الباحث روبرت أُولْسون- والأرجح أنه أميركي- مرحلة مهمة من تاريخ ذلك الكفاح في كتابه: The Emergence Kurdish Nationalism 1880–1925؛ أي (نهضة القومية الكردية)، ورأيت من الأنسب أن نسمّيه (تاريخ الكفاح القومي الكردي).
ترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب في اعتقادي إلى أربعة أسباب يتناول من خلالها المؤلف أحداث الفترة الواقعة بين سنتي (1880 - 1925) في تاريخ كردستان، بدءاً بثورة الشيخ عُبَيْد الله نَهْري، ومروراً بثورة الشيخ محمود بَرزَنْجي وثورة كُوچْگِري، وانتهاءً بثورة الشيخ سعيد پِيران؛ صحيح أن هذه الثورات أخفقت في إقامة دولة كردستان المستقلة، لكنها تمثّل تطوّراً مهمّاً في مسيرة الحركة التحررية الكردية، سواء أكان على الصعيد السياسي أم على الصعيد الثقافي؛ وحسبُها أنها أكدت تمسّك الشعب الكردي بهويته التاريخية، وأنّ ما واكبها من نضالات وتضحيات شكّل قوّة دفعٍ للأجيال الكردية اللاحقة في طريق الكفاح.
