يعد كل من كتاب "جمهرة أنساب العرب" لابن حزم، وما أورده المقري من اقتباسات عن كتاب "فرحة الأنفس" لابن غالب، من أفضل المصادر عن استقرار المسلمين في إسبانيا، ولكن بعضاً من المعلومات التي وردت في هذين المصدرين كانت بعيدة عن الفترة المبكرة للفتوح بالإضافة إلى كونها معلومات قد اتصفت بالتعميم، ومع هذا فقد اكتفى بعض المؤرخين المحدثين بالاعتماد على هذين المصدرين فقط عند وصف استقرار المسلمين في إسبانيا.
وعلى الرغم من قيام الدكتور حسين مؤنس بدراسة مطولة عن العصر الإسلامي الأول في الأندلس، إلا أنه لم يخصص إلا بعض صفحات فقط عن استقرار المسلمين الحقيقي هناك. ومن ناحية أخرى فإن P.Guichard قد أدرك عدم إمكانية كتابة دراسة أصلية عن الاستقرار العربي في إسبانيا بالاعتماد على مصدر واحد فقط.
ومن أجل إعداد دراسة وافية ووصف شامل للاستقرار كان من المفروض أن تتبع طريقة مختلفة في هذا البحث الذي بين يدينا، طريقة تعتمد كل المصادر العربية التي لها علاقة بالتاريخ المبكر للمسلمين في شمال أفريقيا وإسبانيا وبخاصة كتب التراجم والأنساب. يضاف إلى ذلك أن هناك عاملاً مهماً آخر قد استمت به الطريقة المتبعة في هذا البحث، وهو تصنيف العشائر المستقرة.
فلقد أخذ بنظر الاعتبار عند ترتيب هذه العشائر الوقت الذي دخلن منه إسبانيا إضافة إلى أصولها القبلية. لقد حدث كل من الفتح الإسلامي لإسبانيا، واستقرار المسلمين فيها في آن واحد تقريباً، لهذا كان من الضروري القيام بدراسة مفصلة للفتح في بداية هذا البحث، إضافة إلى تقديم عرض للموقف في شمال أفريقيا وإسبانيا قبيل الفتح.
كما وفيه أيضاً شرح للتعاون الذي كان مسبوقاً بصراع طويل بين العرب والبربر في شمال أفريقيا، وفيه أيضا تتبع للجيوش العربية في شمال أفريقيا منذ الوقت الذي غادرت فيه الإسكندرية تحت قيادة عمرو بن العاص حتى وصلت طنجة بقيادة موسى بن نصير وطارق بن زياد. ثم تتبع للعرب والبربر بعد عبورهم المشترك إلى إسبانيا بأقصى ما يمكن من جهد موضحاً أماكم وطرق استقرارهم، وعلاقاتهم مع السكان الأصليين، وعلاقاتهم مع الخلافة والحاكم العالم لشمال أفريقيا وإسبانيا، وفتوحاتهم في جنوبي فرنسا وفعالياتهم واهتماماتهم، ومنافساتهم الداخلية سواء فيما بين رجال القبائل العربية أو مع البربر حتى نهاية عصر الولاة. وأخيراً فقد ناقش البحث أيضاً الظروف التي أدت إلى دخول الأمير الأموي عبد الرحمن بن معاوية وتأسيس الإمارة الأموية المستقلة سنة 138هـ/756م.
