يتبوأ ابن عذاري المراكشي مكانة مرموقة بين أولئك النوابغ الذين أنجبتهم الأمة خلال ذلك العصر العصيب، بالنظر إلى ما يمثله من تراث حي، لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه في دراسة تاريخ المغرب والأندلس، ونقصد بذلك، كتابه القيم الموسوم: البيان المعرب في أخبار الأندلس والمغرب. فلقد عاش ابن عذاري في ذلك العصر، وتشرب الثقافة العربية الإسلامية التي كانت سائدة في المشرق والمغرب، واهتم بهذه الثقافة، واطلع على أصولها, فكان حصيلة ذلك كله، وعصارة فكره النير، سفراً جليلاً، قدمه للأجيال التالية، ليكون نبراساً في التعرف إلى تاريخ المغرب العربي، بل الشمال الأفريقي كله، بالإضافة إلى الأندلس، وذلك منذ السنوات الأولى للفتوح الإسلامية والتحرير وإلى نهاية دولة الموحدين.
لقد تضمنت مباحث هذا الكتاب دراسة شخصية وعصر ابن عذاري، ومؤلفاته المفقودة والباقية، ومنهجه في التأليف، وأسلوبه، وقد تم عذاري، وأصوله الأولى، وذلك لأهمية هذا الموضوع الذي اعتمدها ابن عذاري، وأصوله الأولى، وذلك لأهمية هذا الموضوع الذي يكشف عن المصادر التي كانت بتصرف هذا المؤرخ. وتبرز هذه الأهمية بالنظر إلى أن معظم هذه الأصول أصبحت مفقودة في الوقت الحاضر، ولا يمكننا أن نتعرف إليها إلا في النقولات التي تبقت لنا في هذا الكتاب، والتي عمل ابن عذاري على استفادة منها وحفظها لتكون بين يدي الباحثين، والراغبين بالإطلاع على تاريخ المغرب والأندلس.
