موضوع الكتاب هو الثورة التي قادها محمد أحمد المهدي (1844- 1885م) في أخريات الحكم المصري في السودان بدءًا من 1881 والتي أدت إلى خروج مصر من البلاد حين أخذت بريطانيا قرارًا بإخلائه من القوات المصرية، حتى إعادة فتحه سنة 1896- 1898 على يد (كتشنر) كما أسلفت. والكتاب يعد من أهم ما كتب عن الثورة المهدية والعلاقات المصرية السودانية خلال الفترة (1874- 1898) وهي الفترة التي قضاها المؤلف بين ربوع السودان كضابط في الجيش المصري هناك، وأسيرًا لدى المهديين حتى خلاصه من الأسر سنة 1898. ويرتبط عنوان الكتاب ببداية حكم غوردون للسودان (1874) ونهاية الثورة في سنة 1898 على يد (كتشنر)، والدلالة هنا واضحة، فهو يقصد الكتابة عن تاريخ السودان بين عهدي الرجلين غوردون وكتشنر.
