إن البحث في تدوين السنة يكتسب أهمية بالغة في خضم الجدل الذي يقوم حالياً حول تطبيق الشريعة الإسلامية، لأن هذه الشريعة تستمد معظم أحكامها من السنة هذا وقد شاب السنّة ملابسات في العصر الإسلامي الأول وقامت خلافات حول تدوينها. في هذا الإطار يأتي موضوع الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته.
فقد تضمن عرضاً تاريخياً للمراحل التي تم فيها تدوين السنّة، والملابسات التي قامت حول امتناع الصحابة عن تدوينها، وما تبع ذلك من انتشار الكذب على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأسبابه، والطريقة التي اتبعها العلماء في القرنين الثاني والثالث الهجريين لجمع السنة الصحيحة وتنقيتها من الأحاديث الموضوعة، والتخبط في جمع أحاديث وأقوال عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خالية من السنة وتسيء إلى مقام النبوّة.
وقد تناول المؤلف في دراسته النصوص التي جاءت في السنة من المعاملات المدنية وأحكام الأسرة والأحكام الجنائية المدوّنة في الكتب الستة، والخلافات التي قامت بين أصحاب المذاهب حول صحتها وحول الأحكام التي انبثقت عنها.
