إن من الكليات الضرورية التي اتفق علماء الإسلام علي أن الاسلام جاء للحفاظ علي النفس وهذه واحدة من كليات خمس: الدين والنفس والعقل والنسل والمال.. فكل ماجاء به الإسلام من عقائد وعبادات وتشريعات ومباديء إنما يتوخي فيها مصالح العباد وحاجاتهم الضرورية وسعادتهم في الدنيا وسعادتهم الخالدة في الآخرة ولا يمكن ان توجد حياة إنسانية لها معني الا بالمحافظة علي بقاء هذه الكليات الخمس وهي ليست علي مرتبة واحدة من ضرورتها فبعضها أؤكد من بعض.
فالمتأمل في احكام الشريعة كلها يجدها محققة لهذه الأصول الخمسة فقواعد الإيمان وأركان الاسلام جاءت للحفاظ علي الدين واحكام الدية والقصاص والدماء والجروح جاءت للحفاظ علي النفس وتحريم الخمر والمسكرات واللهو جاءت للحفاظ علي العقل وشرعت أحكام النكاح والأسرة للحفاظ علي النسل كما شرعت المعاملات والبيع وحرمت السرقة للحفاظ علي المال، فما من حكم من احكام الشريعة الا وجاء للمحافظة علي أصل من هذه الأصول الخمسة أو للمحافظة لما لابد منها لإكمالها أو تحسينها فهذه مقاصد الشرع: أما ضرورية او حاجية او تحسينية.
