أصبح توثيق النصوص المنقولة، وعزو كل نص مقتبس إلى مصدره سمة الأبحاث العلمية المعاصرة –لا سيما رسائل الماجستير والدكتوراه- كما أصبح خلو البحث من التوثيق والإحالات- مع وجود النقل- خروجاً عن قواعد البحث العلمي.
ولا ريب أن الأبحاث الموثقة تجعل القارئ مطمئناً للنتائج التي توصل إليها الباحث، وتشعره بمدى الأمانة العلمية عنده، كما تساعده على معرفة مصدر نقل أعجبه فأراد الاستزاده منه.
وكثيراً ما يقع في الطباعة سقط وتحريف وتصحيف تدع لب القارئ حيران، فيتشكك في معلوماته. فإذا أراد أن يزيل هذا الشك من مصدره، ولم تكن تلك النقول موثقة، فإنه سيبذل جهداً ووقتاً طويلاً لإزالته، وربما يصل في النهاية إلى صحة ما يعلم، وخطأ المطبعة، فيندم على إضاعة ذلك الجهد بلا طائل. وربما يدفعه ذلك إلى عدم الثقة بكل ما جاء في الكتاب، بل قد تجعله كثرة ذلك لا يثق بالمؤلف نفسه، وكان يمكن تلافي هذا كله بإشارة موجزة من الكاتب إلى مصدره الذي استقى منه.
ولكون توثيق النصوص وإحالتها إلى مصادرها ذا أثر خطير في القارئ والكتاب، يهتم الأساتذة في الجامعات بتوجيه طلابهم إلى الالتزام هذه الصفة التي تعد من خصائص البحث العلمي.
وما يسعى إليه هذا البحث هو بيان أهمية توثيق الحديث عن مصادره والطريقة المثلى في تخريج الحديث الشريف.
