إن البحث العلمي في الجامعات العربية والإسلامية يواجه أزمة لا يمكن فصلها عن الأزمات التي تواجه الأمة كلها، وتعطّل مسيرتها وإستعادة نهضتها من حالتها التراجعية وإنكفائها على الذات متخلفة عن ركب التحديث والتطور والتنمية، نتيجة تخلف المؤسسات التعليمية ومراكز البحوث والدّراسات التي لا تخضع لعملية المراجعة والنظر في وظائفها وأصبح التعليم لا يقود المجتمعات بل يعيش في التاريخ وخلف المجتمع ومشكلاته وهمومه وبالرغم من زيادة الجامعات إلا أنها لا تحقق نقلة نوعية في الحياة ولا تنمية حقيقية في الأمة مع زيادة نسبة الألقاب العلمية والرسائل الجامعية التي تجسد أسباب التخلف الحقيقية.
البحث العلمي دراسة تستغرق فترة زمنيّة يحتاج فيها الباحث إلى تتبع كل ما يتعلق بموضوعه بما يمكنّه من إحداث إبتكار في مجال المعرفة أو التّوصّل إلى إستنتاجات جديدة تمثل إضافة أو مراجعة للحقائق المعروفة، لذا كان توافر المعلومات المرتبطة بالبحث أساس النجاح الذي يتوقف على جهد الباحث وقدرته على تحديد حاجته من المعلومات ثم فعاليته في إستخدامها وتوظيفها بصورة حسنة مفيدة.
ولأهمية هذا الموضوع، اعتنى ببحثه الدكتور "عباس محجوب" حينما كان رئيساً لجامعة القرآن الكريم والعلوم الإسلامية، وذلك نتيجة لمناقشات في أحوال البحث العلمي ومدى إلتزام الباحثين بالشروط العلمية والموضوعية والبحثية في كتابة الرسائل.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في خمسة فصول ألحقها المؤلف بالمصادر والمراجع وهي كالتالي: الفصل الأول: "صفات البحث العلمي"، الفصل الثاني: "الأصول الصّحيحة للكتابة"، الفصل الثالث: "تحقيق المخطوطات"، الفصل الرّابع: "أشهر المصادر العربية"، الفصل الخامس: "أشهر المصادر الإسلاميّة".
