يتضمن المعجم تعريفات للمصطلحات التكنيكية وللمفاهيم وأنواع الأفلام والأساليب الفنية التي أستحدثت في عملية التعبير والتحليل السينمائي مرتبة ترتيباً أبجدياً، ولكل مصطلح معناه القائم بذاته فضلاً عن دلالته التاريخية والفنية والجمالية، وإلى جانب المصطلحات يضم المعجم ملخصاً سريعاً لتطور فن الصور المتحركة طوال أكثر من مائة عام، وعلامات الطريق الفاصلة في مسار هذا الفن والاختراعات التي مهدت لميلاده من القرن الحادي عشر وحتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر حين خرج أول شريط للصور المتحركة من مصانع لوميير عام 1895.
