هذا الكتاب الذي ترجم مباشرة عن الروسية يشتمل مختارات من مقالات ومداخلات نشرت في الصحف، إضافة إلى يوميات كان فيرتوف يتحدث فيها عن تجربته في مجال إستكشاف "لغة" جديدة للسينما، كما يضم الكتاب خطة عمل فيلمه الشهير "الرجل والكاميرا السينمائية" وهي، كما الفيلم، في نفس الوقت عبارة عن دراسة نظرية في جوهر السينما حيث كان فيرتوف يعتبر أن السينما الوثائقية هي التي تعبر عنه بعكس السينما التمثيلية التي تقوم على عالم مصطنع، وكذلك يضم ترجمة لمقطع صغير من نص الشريط الصوتي في فيلم "الحماس" أو "سيمفونية الدونباس" وهو المحاولة الأولى في العالم لتسجيل الأصوات الطبيعية الحقيقية خارج الأستوديو.
