إن الطب الباطني من أكثر فروع الطب تعقيداً وتشعباً، ولهذا فإن الطبيب المتخصص في هذا النوع من الطب قد يجد نفسه أحياناً حائراً- رغم تقدم وسائل التشخيص وتطورها- أمام مريض ما يشكو من على معينة في أحد أجهزته الباطنية ويبدأ في التخمين الذي قد يزعج به مريضه دون الوصول إلى بعض الأحيان إلى حل مشكلة المرضية.
ومع ذلك فإن الطب الباطني حظي في هذه الأيام بتقدم هائل وذلك نظراً للتخصصات الدقيقة التي اختص بها الطب في العالم، وأصبح المريض والطبيب معاً في موطن المرض والوقوف عند أسبابه.
وهذا الجزء من الموسوعة الطبية يهتم بتشريح الأجهزة الباطنية التي يتكون منها الجسم، فبدأ بالجهاز الهضمي بأجزائه، الفم واللسان، والغدد اللعابية، والأمعاء والمريء، والمعدة، ثم مراحل الجهاز الهضمي، وفي الفصل الثاني تحدث عن مراحل الهضم والامتصاص وحركات الجهاز الهضمي والأمعاء الدقيقة. أما الفصل الثالث: فقد أفرده للحديث عن هرمونات وأنزيمات الجهاز الهضمي، من عصارات هضمية وإفراز عصارة المعدة والعصارة الصفراوية.
أما الفصل الرابع: فكان لأمراض الجهاز الهضمي متمثلاً في اضطربات الجهاز الهضمي. أما الفصل الخامس: فكان لأورام الأمعاء والسادس لأمراض ملحقات الأمعاء. أما الفصل السابع فقد تحدث فيه عن الجهاز التنفسي. أما الفصل الثامن: فقد أفرده لأمراض الجهاز التنفسي كأمراض الرئة. وتحدث في الفصل التاسع: عن جهاز الدوران. أما الفصل العاشر: فقد كان للأوعية الدموية متمثلاً في الشرايين. أما الفصل الحادي عشر: فخصصناه للقلب وأمراضه. والفصل الثاني عشر: كان لشرايين الدورة الجهازية والثالث عشر لأوردة الدورة الجهازية. والفصل الرابع عشر: فقد كان للدم. أما الفصل الخامس عشر: فقد أفرده لأمراض جهاز الدوران. والفصل السادس عشر: لأمراض الجهاز القلبي والوعائي. والفصل السابع عشر: لأمراض الأوعية الدموية. والفصل الثامن عشر: للجهاز الليمفاوي. والفصل التاسع عشر: فقد كان لأمراض الدم والعقد الليمفاوية.
