حاول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة أن يلقي الضوء على فني (القصة والرواية)، وعلى ما يمتازان به من سائر الفنون النثرية الأخرى. كما حاول أن يوضح أهم عناصر القصة، وعرض إلى أنواعها، وقد أشار إلى بعضها في ثنايا الدراسة. وحلل بعضها الآخر ولا سيما عند (محمود تيمور وميخائيل نعيمة)، ووقف وقفة متأنية عند الواقعية في الأدب، ليخلص منها إلى دراسة القصة.
ورغبة منه في وضع أسس سليمة لدراسة القصة والرواية، حاول أن يذكر الخطوات العامة التي يمكن أن يتبعها الطلاب، ويسيروا عليها عند دراستهم لأية قصة. ثم انتقل إلى الرواية، فنوه بالفروق بينها وبين القصة، وقدم بعد ذاك موجزاً عن حياة (نجيب محفوظ) تمهيداً لدراسة روايتيه (زقاق المدق، واللص والكلاب) اللتين وقف عندهما وقفة طويلة متأنية. فلخص كلاً منهما، ثم درسهما دراسة تحليلية.
وقد تبين له أن هذا الكاتب، حاول في روايته الأولى تصوير المجتمع المصري عامة، وتصوير حي من أحياء الطبقة الوسطى خاصة، لأنه يرى أنه حي المشكلات التي هي المنبع الصافي والغزير للروائي.
