لعنوان والنبوءة البابلية المذكورة في مطلع الكتاب، يلمح كلاهما إلى الأسطورة بشأن برج بابل، حيث النبوءة بذاتها هي إلهامٌ ومثالٌ في آن. وسيّان أكان ما حدث أسطورة أم سياقاً تاريخياً، تعليماً أخلاقياً أم قدراً محتوماً، فالمؤكد أن المدن القديمة قد انتهت جميعها إلى الخراب: أي إلى «تِلُّ» كما يقول البابليون، وهي تقابل في العربية مفردة تَلّ، وتشير إلى هُضيبات مكوَّنة من طبقات من ركام المواضع القديمة. وإذا كان فخر الملك الآشوري أسرحدون وهو يصوّر زحف جيشه الظافر والغازي «أمامه مدينة وخلفه خراب (تِلُّ)»، فإنّ فخر علماء الآثار المنكبِّين على بلاد المشرق في العصر الحديث يبدو على نقيض ذلك: «أمامنا خراب وخلفنا مدينة». ولا يشكّل الاكتشاف مجدّداً، سواء ما تعلق منه بالآثار أو النقائش القديمة لمدن الشرق القديم، فصلاً هامشيّاً في تاريخنا الثقافيّ الحديث؛ بل إضافة جليلة في شتى النواحي الثقافية، تمتد إلى الأحداث التاريخيّة العائدة إلى القرنين الأخيرين.
