"لعنة بابل" عبارة عن نظرات في اللغة، ليست على غرار نظرات النحويين، وان كان لهم عليّ فضل لا يجحده عاشق للغته، ولكن أحببت كلمة قالها المعرّي في" رسالة الملائكة"، وهي كلمة خاطب بها النحو قائلاً: يا نحو، حقّ لما كتب منك المحو. ولو ان الكلمة خرجت من فم شخص آخر لكان يمكن أن تعتبر بمثابة هرطقة نحوية تستحقّ، ربّما، المحو أو في الأقلّ، التنديد. لكننا نعرف انّ المعرّي عجن اللغة وخبزها. وعرف ما تسرّه اللغة وما تعلنه.
وهو ايضا نظرات في أفواه الناس. فاللغة ليست بنت ما كتب، وانما بنت ما تنبس به الشفاه، فاللغة صرخة قبل أن تكون قلماً. ولرغبة الانسان في دحر هشاشته اخترع الكتابة كألبوم صور صوتية حين عجز عن ايجاد وسيلة أخرى للحفاظ على ذاكرته المعرفيّة. إلى أنْ جاء زمنٌ قبض فيه الإنسان على الصوت. صار بإمكاننا انْ نسمع كلمات الموتى ليس من خلال خطّ أصابعهم وانّما من خلال نبرات صوتهم وتعابير وجوههم، بل أصبح بالإمكان اليوم استخراج الكلام من أذهان الخرسان وسماعه، وهذا مدار مقال في الكتاب بعنوان "الأخرس الناطق".
