صار الانتداب الفرنسي الذي منحته الدول الحليفة الرئيسية لفرنسا وصدقت عليه عصبة الأمم قبل ربع قرن، في ذمة التاريخ بعد أن ترك دولتي سوريا ولبنان الفتيتين لتواجها مقتضيات وأخطار الاستقلال المفتقد إلى الحماية. ومع أن الفرنسيين كانوا قد أعلنوا مراراً أن الانتداب الذي يستقي شرعية من العصبة لا يمكن أن ينتهي إلا بقرار منها، فإنه بلغ نهايته في الواقع بحكم التوقف عن ممارسته عملياً، ووسط جو من المشاعر المشحونة فيما بين الفرقاء المعنيين، لقد وجدت في لبنان فئات كانت تشعر بالأسف لرحيل الانتداب أو على الأقل لفقدان الحماية والارتياح اللذين كانت توفرهما الصلة الوثيقة مع فرنسا، لكن وجهة النظر لم تكن تنسجم مع رأي الأغلبية الساحقة في الجمهوريتين التي أصدرت حكماً قاسياً على السجل الانتدابي، واعتبرت أن انقضاء الحكم الفرنسي وجلاء قوات فرنسا هي بمثابة انتصار للنزعة القومية لفرنسا أكثر منها نهاية لشراكة تستحق التقدير.
على صعيد الأمم الأخرى، التي لم تصدر يوماً أحكاماً رقيقة جداً على أقدار جيرانها، فإن سجل فرنسا في سوريا كان مشؤوما على العموم، لكن التشديد الصارم على الأخطاء المنسوبة للانتداب لم يستند في الأغلب إلى الدراسة الموضوعية، ولم يأخذ بعين الاعتبار العمل الممتاز الذي تم تحقيقه في مختلف المجالات، ولضخامة الصعوبات التي واجهت الفرنسيين.
وفي هذا الإطار جاء هذا الكتاب حيث يحاول المؤلف فيه إلقاء الضوء على تلك الفترة وذلك استناداً،لحصيلة تجارية الشخصية المباشرة، ومعايشته للأحداث، ومعرفته بالعديد من المسؤولين الفرنسيين والسوريين آنذاك، ويؤرخ بموضوعية مجردة لفترة هي من حساب التاريخ من أحرج ما مر على الوطن العربي من أحداث. والمهم في هذا الكتاب هو النتيجة التي طلع بها المؤلف والتي تتمحور حول الصعوبات التي واجهت الفرنسيين في فترة الانتداب.
