تتناول فصول الكتاب معلومات موثقة وغير منشورة سابقاً عن تفاصيل مرحلة مهمة من تاريخ الأردن والمنطقة، تمتد من حرب 1967، وما سبقها ورافقها من اتصالات بين الراحليْن العاهل الأردني الملك حسين والرئيس المصري جمال عبدالناصر، وتداعيات الهزيمة وخسارة القدس والضفة الغربية.
كما تتطرق إلى "معركة الكرامة" وما ترتب عليها من تزايد نفوذ التنظيمات الفلسطينية في الأردن، وأحداث "أيلول الأسود"، إذ كان زيد بن شاكر خلالها أحد كبار ضباط الجيش الأردني.
ويتناول الكتاب أيضاً العلاقة بين الراحليْن الملك حسين والرئيس العراقي صدام حسين، وموقف الأردن من حرب الخليج الثانية، الداعم للحل العربي الذي رفضه صدام.
روايات السيدة نوزاد الساطي جاءت في سياق معلومات وذكريات تركها زوجها لديها في محاولة منه لكتابة مذكراته، قبل وفاته عام 2002.
ويستمد الكتاب أهميته، من أن زيد بن شاكر كان أشدّ المقربين من الملك حسين، ورافقه على مدى عقود، كما تدرّج في الرتب العسكرية من قائد لواء للدروع، إلى قائد الجيش ووزير الدفاع، ثم رئيس الديوان الملكي ورئيس الوزراء.
