قال الله تعالى في كتابه العزيز "كل نفس ذائقة الموت ثم إلينا ترجعون" وفي هذا الكتاب خطوات الإستعداد أو الموت قبل الوفاة مثل "الوصية" وأثناء الوفاة "الإختصار" وبعد الوفاة "تغسيل الميت"، والأدعية المستحبة وأخيراً "دفن الميت" مع ذكر للأعمال التي ينتفع بها الميت، إلى آخر ذلك من مستحبات بعد الوفاة. أيضاً يضم الكتاب "أحكام شرعية" حول الميت من شروط الغسل، وشروط الكفن، والشهادة، وآداب التشييع، وما يجب في الصلاة على الميت، ووقت الصلاة على الميت، وسنن الدفن ومقدماته، وما يكتب على القبر، والحداد على الميت، وأحكام الحداد للمرأة المتوفى زوجها، وأهم ما في الكتاب تذكير بالأعمال الصالحات "إذا مات الإنسان إنقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له"
وعن الإمام الصادق (رضي الله عنه): يدخل على الميت في قبره الصلاة والصوم والحج والصدقة وأعمال البر ويكتب أجره للذي يفعله وللميت".
