ارتبط اسم إحسان عباس بالمكتبة العربية كأحد أعلامها المرموقين من خلال ما يقرب من تسعين كتاباً وضعها في الدراسات الأدبية والنقدية، وتحقيق المخطوطات والترجمة، أغنت الحياة العلمية والأدبية والثقافية، فكان مواكباً لتطور الحركة الأدبية والنقدية العربية، ومتتبّعاً ظواهرها، ومعالجاً أهم قضاياها، من طريق حس نقدي مرهف، ومنهج علمي دقيق، وثقافة واسعة.
ولعلّ من أبرز الفنون الأدبية التي أولاها إحسان عباس إهتماماً خاصاً منذ بداياته النقدية هو فن السيرة، حيث قدّم عدداً من السير الغيرية عن أبي حيّان التوحيدي، والحسن البصري، والشريف الرضي، وبدر شاكر السيّاب.
وكتب على المستوى التنظيري واحداً من أوائل الكتب التي تناولت هذا النوع الأدبي هو كتاب (فن السيرة) 1956، وكما اهتم إحسان عباس بالتنظير لهذا الفن نراه قبل سنوات قليلة من وفاته يكتب سيرته الذاتية (غربة الراعي) وقد أودع فيها خلاصة حياته الشخصية منذ طفولته في قريته عين غزال مؤرخاً لحقبة من أهم الحقب التي مرّت بها بلاده فلسطين، وهي فترة الإنتداب البريطاني بنظرة شاهد عيان آثار وقوع النكبة، كما رصدت سيرته الذاتية إهتماماته الثقافية، ومسيرته العلمية، وكشفت عن العديد من آرائه النقدية والفكرية.
وبالنظر إلى أن إحساس عباس واحدٌ من القلائل في الأدب العربي الحديث الذين نظّروا للسيرة الذاتية في كتابه المهمّ "فن السيرة" ثم أصدر في خريف العمر سيرته الذاتية (غربة الراعي) أي أنه جمع بين التنظير والتطبيق.
لذلك، قامت المؤلف بدراسة هذا الموضوع دراسة جامعية تحاول الإجابة عن سؤال محوري يسمى في كتب منهجية البحث (تحديد مشكلة البحث)، والسؤال هو: إلى أي مدى وجدت الفصول النظرية التي سطّرها إحسان عباس في كتابه (فن السيرة) طريقها إلى التطبيق في غرابة الراعي؟.
وقد اتبعت المؤلفة في هذا البحث على الموازنة بين الجوانب النظرية في كتاب (فن السيرة) والتطبيق في غربة الراعي، للإجابة عن هذا السؤال.
