كثيراً ما يتردد على ألسنة الخطباء وفي الصحف والمجلات وفي الكتب كلمة إستشراق وبخاصة عندما يكون الحديث عن الغزو الفكري أو الثقافي وآثاره السيئة.
وقد بالغ البعض في ذم الإستشراق وكل ما يمت إليه بصلة، بينما يرى البعض أن الإستشراق إنما هو جهد علمي لدراسة الشرق، وبخاصة بعض الذين تتلمذوا على أيدي بعض المستشرقين حيث يرون فيهم المثال في المنهجية والإخلاص والدقة وغير ذلك من النعوت المادحة.
والحقيقة إن الإستشراق قد شغل حيزاً كبيراً في الكتابات العربية وذلك لأن الحضارة الغربية التي نشأ فيها الإستشراق هي الحضارة الغالبة في العصر الحاضر، فقد كتب المستشرقون في شتى القضايا الإسلامية ابتداءً من القرآن الكريم وتفسيره والكتابة حول السنة النبوية والتاريخ الإسلامي إلى الكتابة في اللغة العربية وآدابها وشتى القضايا في الإسلام وحياة المسلمين إجتماعياً وإقتصادياً وسياسياً.
ومما أضاف إلى أهمية الإستشراق أن البعثات العلمية إلى ديار الغرب بدأت منذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر في عهد محمد علي الكبير وبعض الحكام المعاصرين له في العالم الإسلامي.
وقد تلقى كثير من أبناء المسلمين العلوم الإسلامية على أيدي المستشرقين، ولم يتوقف الأمر عند هذا فقد استضافت بعض الجامعات العربية والإسلامية عدداً من هؤلاء للتدريس فيها كما حدث في الجامعة المصرية حين استضافت بعض المستشرقين لتدريس آداب اللغة العربية.
