برنارد لويس مستشرق بريطاني الأصل يهودي المعتقد، صهيوني الفكر، أمريكي الجنسية، من أبرز المستشرقين المعاصرين وأخطرهم، الذي يعد بحق رأس المستشرقين حالياً، وله كتابات وبحوث ودراسات كثيرة ومعظمها في الدراسات العربية والإسلامية.
تقدم هذه الدراسة رؤية فكرية إسلامية جديدة ومعاصرة لآراء هذا المستشرق، الذي انخدع فيه كثير من مثقفينا بأسلوبه الأدبي الجذاب، إذ كشفنا عن كثير من أخطائه وأهدافه، بالدليل والبرهان، والرد على إفتراءاته للإسلام والمسلمين، لا سيما أنه تخصص في الفكر الإسلامي أكثر من ستين عاماً وهو في خدمة الإستعمار.
وقد حظى برنارد لويس بإهتمام كبير في الأوساط الثقافية الإسلامية والعربية من خلال خدمته الطويلة في التعليم والإشراف على العديد من أطاريح الدكتوراه ورسائل الماجستير، وتتلمذ عليه العديد من طلاب الدراسات الشرقية في الغرب والشرق.
ومنذ أن انتهت الحروب الصليبية بالفشل من الناحية العسكرية والسياسية، لم ينقطع تفكير الغرب في الإنتقام من الإسلام وأهله بطرق أخرى.
فكانت الطريقة الأولى هي دراسة الإسلام ونقده حيث نشأت فكرة الإستيلاء على البلاد الإسلامية عن طريق القوة والغلبة حين بدأ العالم الإسلامي يتدهور سياسياً وعسكرياً وإقتصادياً وثقافياً.
لذا فنحن بحاجة أكثر إلى أن نعرف الغرب معرفة وثيقة حتى نستطيع أن نحافظ على هويتنا في وجه التيارات الفكرية التي تستطيع وسائل الإعلام الغربية نشرها بما لديها من أجهزة قوية وإمكانات ضخمة.
