لم يكن هناك غيرى وغيره، يحس حرج ثقل صمتنا، ذلك أننى كنت الشخص الذى كتب كل رسائل "سالم" إلى زوجته حين كانت بتونس، بطلب رجاء منه، أنا الذى وعدتها على لسانه بمخدة من لفائف الياسمين وعريش من حنان النخل والزيتون وشرائط من الحرير المزين بزهور القرنفل، أنا الذى أستحضرت المنفلوطى وكل ما ترسب فى ذاكرتى ووجدانى من العبارات العذبة الرائعة لأعبر عن إحساس مهاجر يحن إلى زوجة من تراب أرضه، نهض بصعوبة وأصر على الدفع، وقبل أن يغادر، أبعد كرسيه واتكآ على الطاولة مقتربآ أكثر ما أمكنه منى وقال لي شبه هامس: رسائلك هى السبب، يا ليتنا كتبنا لها كلامآ معقواآ ومختصرآ.
