تعلق فكري وذوقى بالقريض الشعري, من نصوص الدب العربى المتينة لفظا ومعنى, فى شتى الأغراض الحماسية والشاجية, ومازلت أحفظ بعض المطارحات الشعرية من مجالس الأسمار وأخبار المنازل والديار, منذ نعومة أظفارى, وقد كانت مفردات الحنين, ومثيرات الشجو من أدب العرب وحنينهم تتقاطر على وجدانى كتقاطر الندى فى خدود الورد. ولم يشغلنى شاغل أو يصرفنى صارف عن تلك المناهل العذبة التى ساعدت على نمو الحب إلى حد الوله بوطني, وأمتي, وبلادي.
وكلما ازدادت صرامة الحياة, وتنوع المهام, وتكاثرت الشواغل, زاد غرامي, وولائي حتى أصبح شغفي هوى يحاصرنى, وعشقا للحنين يلازمني, ونزوعا إلى أدب المهاجرين المتغزلين بأوطانهم, وكلما سافرت عن وطنى الأول, وجدت نزوعى إليه يجبرني على التغني بحبه, ويخامر وجدانى عشقه, حتى تشيعت لهواه, ودفعني ذلك الشغف الهتوف لاقتناء كل كتب الحنين إلى الأوطان وهي كثيرة, وجعلت أقلب فيها النظر, وأنعم السمع والبصر, حتى شاطرت أولئك المحبين الذين غلت مراجل العشق فى مهجهم, ونثروا أرواحهم فى تضاعيف قصائد حنينهم وحبهم.
ومن أجل أولئك المحرومين من حق العودة, المغرمين بأوطانهم, ووفاء لحب تملكنى واضطرم فى مهجتى, قمت بجمع بعض نصوص الحنين, والصلاة فى محراب الوطن, من دواوين الشعراء الأقدمين, ومن مخطوطات جمة, بعضها لم تطبع بعد, ومن قصائد وحيدة وفريدة, معظمها من مجموعات سبقني بها السابقون الأولون, ممن كتب وجمع فى هذا الغرض الشعرى, وقد أشرت إلى تلك المصادر فى هوامش المختارات, حفاظا على أمانة البحث, ومراعاة للحق العلمى لأصحاب الفضل على.
