الفرزدق هو واحد من ثلاثة قام على مناكبهم صرح الشعر العربي في عصر بني أمية. فهو لم يدع باباً إلا طرقه، ولا فناً إلا ونظم فيه، فنال إعجاب الناس، وتقدير أهل اللغة والنحو فراحوا يقولون: "لولا شعر الفرزدق لذهب ثلث اللغة ولضاع نصف أخبار الناس". أما شعره الذي قيل فيه الكثير فيمتاز بفخامة العبارة، وجزالة اللفظ، وكثرة الغريب... وهو من أفخر شعراء العرب، لأن مواد الفخر اكتملت لديه همة ونسباً. أما قصائد فهي تصدع الجبال، أدركت كل ثنية وتذيعت في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها. ولئن قضت العوامل السياسية والاجتماعية أن يلتحم مع جرير في التهاجي والسباب حتى أفتى وشغلا الناس بنقائضهما، فلقد استوجبت أيضاً أن يكون الفرزدق مقتنعاً في هجائه، فاحشاً في سبابه، سبله إلى ذلك بذاءة في الألفاظ والمعاني، وفحش في نهش الأعراض وقذف المحصنات. فهو حين يهجو جريراً يسلبه كل الفضائل والقيم فيجعله خاملاً عن طلب المجد والعلى... وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يحتوي على ديوان الفرزدق الكامل مرتب على حروف الهجاء، ومعنونة قصائده ومقطوعاته بعناوين منتخبة، ومشروحة ألفاظه الغامضة بشروحات مسهبة تعين الباحث على الإلمام بمعنى اللفظ، كما واعتنى الباحث بتسمية بحور الشعر، والتعريف بالأماكن والإعلام، وإضافة أشعار لا يستهان بها في حواشيه، متوخياً في كل ذلك الدقة في العمل، والتبسيط في الشرح.
