منذ اواخر النصف الاول من القرن العشرين انشغل النقد العربي بالسيرة الشعبية، عبر نصوصها المختلفة، نظراً لما شكلته من أثر بالغ في عموم الحياة العربية، وحياة الافراد على نحو خاص، في تعبيرها عن عموم تجاربها في رؤيتها لماضيها ووعيها لحاضرها وتطلعها لمستقبلها، لتكون دراسة للنقد نفسه في مراحلة المختلفة، ان مراجعة نقد السيرة كما تحققت في كتاب صفاء ذياب، مراجعة لفاعلية النقد العربي في مساره التاريخي، ورصد لقابليته على ادراك الخصائص النوعية الجمالية منها والنسقية، لنصوص السيرة الشعبية فضلاً عن اهتمامه بفاعلية التلقي التي جعلت من المتلقي العربي عنصراً فاعلاً اسهم في توجيه المرويات السيرية على نحو جديد.
يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على التجربة النقدية العربية على مدى اثنتين وسبعين عاماً، باحثاً في المفاهيم الاساسية لنقد السيرة بدءاً من التعريفات المؤسسة مروراً بدراسة العلاقة بين الشفاهية والكتابة، كما تمثلت في النص السيري، ونظراً في اشكالية النوع السيري، فضلاً عن علاقة السيرة الشعبية بمفهومين اساسيين هما التاريخ والتخييل.
