"أكثر الناس الكلام فيما ورد في الكتاب والسنة من الألفاظ المشكلة، بسبب تطرَق المعاني المحتملة، وتشعَبت الآراء وتباينت المذاهب، وسلك كل فريق طريقاً، وقد تدبرت ما وقع بينهم من الإختلاف، بطريق العدل والإنصاف، فوجدت الفرق كلها دائرةً بين مفرط في التأويل، ومفرَط في التشبيه والتعطيل، فرأيت أن أنهج سواء السبيل، لمن شرح الله صدره لفهم الدليل. والعجب أن كلَ فرقة تعتقد أنها على الصواب، من اتَباع السنة والكتاب، ولا أصل لذلك إلا إتباع مقالات الرؤساء، ولا سبيل للعدول منهم عنه إلا بطرح العجب والتعجَب، وفتح باب الإعتبار في المقال والتأدَب، فحينئذ تشرق أنوار الهداية لائحة، وينبع معين التوفيق، فيقوم قدم التوحيد ثابتاً على أساسه. وكلامنا في ذلك يقع مع أهل الملل المعترفة بتصديق الرسل، ثمَ مع أهل الملل من المتَبعين لما جاء به محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثمَ مع مثبتي الصفات لله عزَ وجلَ من أتباعه". باختصار.
