في زمن تستعر فييه الصراعات وتشتعل فيه الحروب لا يسع الإنسان إلا أن ينظر إلى الوجود نظرة تشاؤمية، ومع كل نداء للسلام وفترات طويلة أو قصيرة من الاستقرار يلوح الأمل في أن ييستمر البشر في العيش في تفاهم ووئام، ولكن ما أن يشرق هذا الأمل حتى تحدث الانتكاسة وتعود الصراعات على ما كانت عليه بل أكثر حدة تحدث الانتكاسة وتعود الصراعات على ما كاتت عليه بل أكثر حدة وشراسه. في وسط تلك الانتكاسة تقف "نمولة" –وهي واحدة من أصغر الكائنات على الأرض –تقف تائهة حائرة، فعالمها كعالم البشر لم يسلم أيضاً من تلك الموجات العدوانية التي غذاها الصراع من أجل الطموح والسيطرة. فمع الكارثة تلو الكارثة نتساءل إلى متى يستمر العداء؟ ومع إعمال الفكر في أمور عالمنا الذي تسوده الحروب نصل إلى القناعة الأبدية: إنه الشر في العالم.
قد تنسينا في بعض الأحيان عناوين الصحف والصور الحية التي تبثها وسائل الإعلام تلك القناعة، فيتحول انتباهنا إلى الواقع لننسي الحكمة الخالدة التي بنيت عليها حياتنا؛ ذلك الصراع والتناقض بين الخير والشر ولكن ما ماهية هذا الشر؟ هل كان شراً بطبيعته أن أنه خير تحول بفعل قوى الشر إلى شر جديد؟ قد تمتلئ صفحات "نمولة حائرة" برموز لصراعات سياسية معاصرة ولكن لم يقصد بها التعليق على جماعة أو سياسة أو ديانة بعينها بقدر ما قصد بها تسليط الضوء على التجربة الإنسانية محل الاعتبار والتي بنيت في نظر الكاتب على دورات لا متناهية من صدام قوي الخير والشر.
