يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم تعريف بالمحيط الجغرافي الطبيعي والبشري للعالم الإسلامي، تعريف يستند إلى منهج المعرفة الجغرافية، ولغرض تحديد أقطار هذا العالم، فقد اعتمدنا نسبة السكان المسلمين إذا لا تقل نسبتهم عن (50%) من سكان القطر، وعلى أساس هذه النسبة أصبح بالإمكان التمييز بين أقطار العالم الإسلامي ووجود المسلمين وانتشارهم في قارات العالم.
كما يتناول هذا الكتاب أقطار آسيا الوسطى الإسلامية، أي تلك التي كانت المعلومات والبيانات عنها، في الغالب، جزءاً من المعلومات والبيانات التي تذكر عن الاتحاد السوفيتي السابق.
إضافة لما سبق وردت بيانات متميزة أحياناً عن الوطن العربي باعتباره قلب هذا العالم وأساسه الجغرافي والتاريخي والديموغرافي، وجاءت البيانات الديموغرافية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية لأحدث ما أمكن، كما وضعت الاسقاطات المستقبلية أيضاً إسهاماً في استشراف المستقبل والتنبؤ به.
