يتناول هذا الكتاب بالدراسة أسس الجغرافية الطبيعية عن طريق إعطاء صورة معبرة عن الدراسة الطبيعية لظواهر كوكب الأرض، وعرض وتوضيح الأشكال التضاريسية والظواهر المناخية والحيوية من (نبات وحيوان) المتباينة له وتوزيعها في جهات العالم المختلفة. وهي دراسة تشكل ركناً هاماً من أركان (معرفة المكان) التي هي جوهر الدراسة الجغرافية ولبّها.
يتكون إطار هذا الكتاب من ثلاثة أبواب تحتوي إحدى عشر فصلاً، الباب الأول منها يشتمل على أربعة فصول تدور حول دراسة نشأة كوكب الأرض، وتطوره من خلال التعريف على سماته وملامحه العامة التي يمكن أن تفيد في كشف أسرار وحدات (كواكب) النظام الشمسي، وكيفية بدء الحياة، والبحث عن شواهد لها في أي نوع على سطح الكواكب الأخرى غير كوكب الأرض.
ويعرض الكتاب في الباب الثاني لدراسة التركيب البنائي للقشرة الأرضية في ثلاثة فصول، تركز الاهتمام على دراسة المسببات وتحليل العوامل التي تشكل سطح الأرض على مرّ الأزمنة والعصور الجيولوجية وجعلته يبدو بهيئته الراهنة وصورته الحالية. ويعنى الباب الأخير (الباب الثالث) من الكتاب بدراسة كل من المناخ الأرضي والنبات الطبيعي وذلك في أربعة فصول. هذا من جهة المضمون.
أما من جهة المنهج المتبع، فنجد أن المؤلف قد حرص على كتابة متن مُؤَلَّفه بأسلوب سهل، وعرض المعلومات والمفاهيم الأساسية عرضاً مبسطاً ولكنه شاملاً للتطورات الحديثة في هذا الميدان. كما زوّد الكتاب بمجموعة كبيرة من الخرائط والأشكال التوضيحية والصور الفوتوغرافية، جمعت من الدقة والعمق والإيجاز، لكي تعين القارئ على استيعاب مضمون الكتاب وفهم فحواه.
