يتراءى المظهر الأكثر " بروزاً " للأفكار السياسية لشتراوس وآرندت في تشخيصهما المشترك للأزمة ، في قراءتهما المشتركة للوضع الراهن باعتباره وضعاً للأزمة . ومع ذلك سنلاحظ بأن المكان البارز لتبلور الأزمة ليس هو ذاته . يقدم ليو شتراوس نفسه قبل كل شيء ناقداً لأنماط المعرفة الحديثة ، أي أنه يحلل المساحات المشتركة للتأمل الحديث باعتبارها في الأساس أحكاماً مسبقة حديثة ، أي باعتبارها أنماطاً . بهذا المعنى فهو يتبنى موقفاً فلسفياً " كلاسيكياً " الموقف الذي يتشكل من رفض كل ما هو مُعطى . يرفض قبلياً الحداثة كسلطة : إن موقف الفيلسوف هو موقف نقدي : الفيلسوف هو من يتموضع من تلقاء ذاته في علاقة تجاذب مع كل ما هو مقبول عموماً . بنأيه عن بداهات الحداثة ، يكشف شتراوس عن طبيعتها الظرفية .
لدى حنّة آرندت ، يتوازى تثمين الطابع المركزي والكاشف للحدث التوتاليتاري مع الإقرار بأزمة تثوي بين تضاعيف جزء مهم من الوجود الإنساني ( التعليم ، الثقافة ، السلطة ، العربية ، وهلم جراً ) . سيضع تشخيصها أزمة الحكم ضمن أزمة الواقع في ذاته .
