يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من القصص القصيرة لعدد من الأدباء الباكستانيين المعاصرين، مثل محمد سعيد شيخ وممتاز مفتي ونجم الحسن رضوى وأحمد نديم قاسمي وستار طاهر وشمس نعمان وغيرهم.
وقد تم اختيار هؤلاء الأدباء بعناية ودقة، حتى يمكن تمثيل أبرز الملامح الفنية، والمدارس المختلفة للأدب الأردي الحديث، لذا فقد جاء اختيارهم ممثلاً أيضاً للأجيال الأدبية المتعاقبة فمنهم الأدباء المعروفون، ومنهم الشبان أصحاب التجارب المتميزة.
تطرح هذه القصص بوضوح الطابع الاجتماعي والسياسي والفلسفي والديني والأخلاقي. وتمتاز هذه القصص بلغتها التى تقترب من لغة الحياة اليومية في رصد الأحداث المروية، مما يجعلها تصل مباشرة إلى وجدان المتلقي.
وقد حرص المترجم أن يقدم لنا نماذج من إبداع المرأة الباكستانية، مثل الأديبة عقلية كاظمي التى قدم لها قصتين هما: "شوكة في بستانك الجديد" و "ثمن الحرية"، والأدبية الشهيرة بانو قدسية والتى قدم لها قصة بعنوان "كشف"، وهي قاصة حداثية ترى الحياة بعينيها، وتمزج هذه الرؤية من خلال تجاربها، وعادة ما تختار لقصصها تلك الشخصيات التى تعيش حياتها في مفترق الطرق فتدرس قضاياهم، وتتبنى رؤاهم.
خمس عشرة قصة قصيرة، تمثل الاتجاه الواقعي، وتتسم بالصدق في نقل صورة المجتمع في شبه القارة الهندية عامة، وفي باكستان خاصة، كما أنها تتميز بعمق الأفكار وجدتها، فضلا عن لغتها المعبرة وشخصياتها المرسومة بفنية ودقة.
