كان هذا الكتاب من الإصدارات التي حاولت التعرف على ابداعات الخيال في الثقافة الإنسانية عن طريق التعرف على بنية الخيال في مسارها والذي يعتبر مفتاح كل دراسة لعلم الإنسان، ولكل العلوم الإنسانية بما فيها الفنون التي تجسد وتحمل بنية خيال مجتمعاتها.إن هذا الكتاب سيتناول مجالين أساسيين لدراسة: النص والعرض.تقوم الفصول الأولى من الثاني إلى الخامس بتعريف "كيف" الكامنة والخاصة بالنص الدرامي. ونحن نهتم هنا بعناصره الأساسية وتحديد سماته: الشكل، الشخصية، أساليب الحوار والإشارات المسرحية، وقد أفرد لكل منها فصلاً للحديث عنها. أما الفصول من السادس إلى التاسع فتتناول عناصر العرض، حيث يمهد الفصل السادس الأرض لنختبر الحاولات التي بذلت لتصنيف المسرح كنظام علامات، ويعود الفصل السابع إلى موضوع الارشادات المسرحية من أجل تقييم إيحاءاتها بالنسبة للممارسة المسرحية، ويهتم الفصل الثامن بقراءة الصور، ويقدم الفصل التاسع تركيباً بين المداخل إلى النص والعرض التي سبق مناقشتها في الفصول السابقة.
