في هذا الكتاب يقرأ فضيلة الشيخ "ليث الأسدي" الإمام الحسين في فكر السيد الشهيد محمد الصدر بالإستناد إلى نصوص وضعها الأخير فأمعن الأسدي في تحليلها وتفسيرها واستكشاف معاني مفرداتها.
يتمحور الكتاب حول ثورة الإمام الحسين رضي الله عنه ومعالمها وأهدافها ومقاصدها منذ خروجه من المدينة، وحتى وصوله إلى كربلاء، بل حتى وهو في لحظاته الأخيرة، حيث سجّل لنا أروع الخطابات والكلمات في سبيل الله والتضحية من أجله.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن تحليل الإمام الصدر لمقولات الإمام الحسين تقدم عدد من القراءات وتلامس أبعاد مختلفة منها: في تحليله لمقولة الإمام الحسين: "وخير لي مصرعٌ أنا لاقيه"، فقد يكون (خير لي) من (الخير)، وليس من (التخيير) و (الإختيار).
ومن الثنائيات المهمة التي تحدث عنها هذا الكتاب أيضاً: ثنائية (التقية والتضحية)، فرأى الصدر: أن الإمام الحسين قد اختار الخيار الثاني دون الأول، إذ رأى أنه يحقق أهدافاً كبيرة على صعيد الأمة، منها الإصلاح، وإحياء الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر (...) بيد أن الصدر يرى: أن الموقف من هذه الثنائية ليس سهلاً، فلا بد من دراسة الظروف والأحوال والتدبر في العواقب، وحساب دقيق للإيجابيات والسلبيات ...
