تنتظم هذه السلسلة من الحوارات في أحد عشر فصل، هي في الأصل حوارات مذاعة في حلقات عبر محطة "أر تي أف" الفرنسية عام 1959، من خلالها يلقي كلود ليفي شتراوس، صاحب كتاب "ميثولوجيات"، الضوء على أهم الموضوعات التي اختصت بها أبحاثه ومنها "وضع عالم الأنثروبولجيا"، "مسألة الفن الطبيعي والمكتسب"، "الفرق بين وظائف الفن في مجتمعاتنا والمجتمعات البدائية"، "مستقبل الفن واللغة ونظامهما" وغيرها.
مُحاوره هنا "جورج شاربونيه" يطلب منه الترجل من علياء لغته الإصطلاحية ليتحدث بلغة الرجل العادي عن هذه الموضوعات الجسام، فيقبل شتراوس بالرهان وبيدي قدرة فائقة على تقديمها بدرجة عالية من الوضوح والألمعية، من الإختزال والدقة، ويحرص على عدم الإبتعاد عن صلب الموضوع ليفتح لنا في الوقت ذاته الباب إلى تأمل الكثير منها.
أقل ما يمكن قوله عن الموضوعات التي يقدمها هذا الكتاب هو أن لها من الأهمية ما جعلها، وحتى يومنا هذا مرجعاً لمادة إمتحانات دروس الفلسفة والعلوم الإجتماعية للطلبة الفرنسيين.
