تساءل مرة "جورج شاربونيه"، في حواره الشهير مع "ليفي شتراوس": لماذا وضع رجل القانون نظرية التعسف في تطبيق القانون؟ وكان جوابه: "لأن التعسّف يبدأ مع استخدام القانون". والحال -كما يرى شاربونيه- أنّ نظرية ال لم يكن للكتاب نص خلفي كملخص، لذا سنختار منه مستخلص:

ومن صور التعسف في المعرفة ألا يمتلك صاحبها تصورات ناضجة عن الواقع والزمان والسياسة والمجتمعات والإنسان، لتكون ثمرة ذلك كله أحكاما قاصرة عن فهم الأحداث، ورؤى تتورط في أفعال مؤداها خراب البلدان وإتلاف الأرواح والأجساد.
