فربما لا تضفي على الذوق نوعاً من المنانة الفلسفية فحسب، وإنما يمكن أن ينعكس ذلك على أشد العلوم قسوة، ببعض الإناقة التي يتمتع بها الذوق، الذي من دونه تظهر أعظم مهارات تلك العلوم دائماً بنوع من ضيق الفكر والتعصب.
ثمة من يرى أن الكمال هو السبب المكوّن للجمال، وقد امتد هذا الرأي إلى ما هو أبعد من الأشياء الحسية ولكن حتى في الأشياء الحسية، حيث يعتبر الكمال مقياساً، فإنه أبعد من أن يكون سبباً للجمال؛ ذلك أن هذه الصفة، وهي في أسمى مستوى لها تحمل معها دائماً في المرأة فكرة الضعف والنقص، والنساء شديدات الحساسية لهذا، وهن في كل هذا يسترشدن بالطبيعة.
فالجمال الحزين هو المؤثر الأعظم، ولكن الإحتشام بعامة - وهو ترخيص صامت للنقص - هو نفسه صفة محببة، وهي بالتأكيد الأسعى بين الصفات الأخرى، إنني أدرك أنه على كل لسان يدور القول إن علينا أن نحب الكمال، وهذا دليل كاف لي على أنه ليس الموضوع الخاص بالحب، فمن قال إن علينا أن نحب امرأة جميلة، او حتى أي حيوان من الحيوانات الجميلة التي تسرنا؟...
