المدينة هي الصورة المكتملة في الجغرافيا بحدودها المكانية المتعددة وتداعياتها النفسية في الشعر، والمدينة عند الشعراء لم تكن مكاناً مجرداً فقط؛ بل كان لها موقع تاريخي، وسياسي، وفني، فتعلّق الشعراء وفُننوا بها، والمتن الشعري الجزائري غني بذكر المدن لدوافع وأسباب كثيرة، وكل شاعر يشكل صورة المدينة التي يذكرها بأساليب وأوصاف متعددة؛ تشكِّل شخصية المدينة عنده ومن بين هؤلاء نجد الشاعر أحمد الطيب معاش الذي يعد من بين أكثر الشعراء الجزائريين الذين تحفل دواوينهم بذكر المدن الجزائرية والعربية والغربية بكثرة.
لكن أغلب الدراسات التي تناولت المدينة في الشعر العربي المعاصر ركزت على الشعراء الذين تجسدت فيهم العدائية والسلبية للمدينة، وشكلت رؤياهم الشعرية، واحتلت حيزاً كبيراً في أعمالهم الشعرية، أما هذا البحث هذا فقد تناول شخصية المدينة، شخصية قائمة بذاتها، ومن ثم حاول تطبيق أهم المناهج المتاحة في دراستها.
ووفق هذه الرؤية فقد قسم البحث إلى مقدمة، وتمهيد، وثلاثة فصول، وخاتمة وملحق: حددت مقدمة البحث؛ أسباب إختيار الموضوع، الخطة المرسومة المناهج المتبعة، المصادر والمراجع الهامة، الصعوبات والعراقيل التي اعترضت البحث، وأما التمهيد الذي عنون بــ"المدينة والشخصية، المفاهيم والحضور النقدي"، فقد تناول فيه المؤلف ماهية المدينة، والفروق التي بينها وبين القرية، وحضور المدينة في الشعر العربي والجزائري، أما الفصل الأول المعنون بــ"أساليب تقديم المدينة" فقد طبق فيه المؤلف نظرية فيليب هامون كما جاء في دراسته لسيميولوجية الشخصيات، وفي الفصل الثاني الذي عنون بــ"مستويات وصف الشخصية المدينة"، طبق منهاج غريماس، وفي الفصل الثالث الذي عنون بــ"أسلوبية الشخصية المدينة"، فقد تتبع الأسلوب الشعري الذي من خلاله صاغ الشاعر الشخصيات المدن.
