يحدد شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية في كتابه هذا القاعدة في وجوب الاستقامة والاعتدال، ويتابع الكتاب والسنة، في باب أسماء الله، وصفاته، وتوحيده، بالقول والاعتقاد، منبهاً إلى اشتمال الكتاب والسنة على جميع الهدي، مبيناً أن التفرق والضلال إنما حصل بترك بعضه، مشيراً إلى جميع البدع المقابلة في ذلك بالزيادة في النفي والإثبات، ومبدأ حدوثها وما وقع في ذلك من الأسماء المجملة، والاختلاف والافتراق، الذي أوجب تكفير بعض هؤلاء المختلفين بعضهم لبعض، محذراً من ذلك الذي لم يكن إلا بسبب ترك بعض الحق، وأخذ بعض الباطل وكتمان الحق، ولَبْس الحق بالباطل.
