تعتبر دراسة الفلسفة مهمة من الناحية الفلسفية والتاريخية والسياسية أيضاً، إن أسطورة الهند الفلسفية هي أقدم وأعمق تطور مستمر للبحث عن طبيعة الحقيقة ومكان الإنسان بالنسبة لها.
وقد بدأت هذه الأسطورة ببداية الفيدا القديمة التي يمكن إعتبارها أقدم المخطوطات التي وصلتنا عن العقل الإنساني، والتي استمرت، عصراً بعد عصر، في تقدم فلسفي مزدهر جاهدة ان تفهم الحياة والحقيقة.
ودرسنا لهذه الأسطورة لا يكون عملية إستفهام عن شيء مضى، وعلى الرغم من أننا نحترم ونقدر الماضي، فقد اهتم المفكرون والهنود خلال كل العصور بالحقيقة المطلوبة التي لا تخضع لزمان أو مكان.
كذلك يجب أن لا ندرس الفلسفة الهندية كمجرد دراسة إقليمية لبلد ما حاول أن يصل إلى الحقيقة، وعلى الرغم من إتهام بعض النقاد الغربيين للفلسفة الهندية بإهمالها للطريقة العلمية، فإن المفكرين الهنود لم يكونوا ضد التجربة ولم يهملوا الطبيعة في دراساتهم للحقيقة، حتى في دراستهم للإنسان، لم يقتصروا على صفات الإنسان الهندي، إن التركيز الهندي على دراسة طبيعة الإنسان الداخلية هو دراسة الإنسان بشكل عام.
