عصفت نكبة 1948 بالشعب العربي الفلسطيني حيث طرد أكثر من ثلاثة أرباع المليون فلسطيني من بيوتهم وأراضيهم وأصبحوا لاجئين مما أدى إلى تحطيم مجتمعه وانهيار مؤسساته السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية، إضافة للعنصر الأهم لكل مجتمع بشري وهو الأرض، مما أدى إلى تحول الشعب العربي الفلسطيني من مجتمع متكامل إلى مجتمعات متفرقة، ممزقة جغرافياً، مشتتة فأقيمت المخيمات في كل من لبنان وسوريا والأردن إضافة لمخيمات اللاجئين على ما تبقى من الجسد الفلسطيني (الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة) والذي أصيب عام 1967 بنكبة ثانية.
