تكاد تكون رواية "الباحث عن الذهب" سيرة ذاتية لـ "لوكليزيو"، فالشخصية الرئيسية تنطبق عليها كل الصفات والمواصفات التى ترسم شخصية الكاتب، كما أعلن عنها فى تصريحاته وحواراته القليله.
تدور الرواية حول أسرة صغيرة تتكون من الأب والأم والأبن والأبنه، وتنطلق الأحداث من حيلة كلاسيكية اتسمت بها الرواية الأوروبية، حيث يجد الابن - البطل فى أوراق والده خرائط تؤكد وجود كنز فى البلاد البعيدة، وعليه أن يركب البحر من أجل الوصول إليه، ويقدم على الرحيل بعد وفاة والده وبعد أن طردهم العم من بيتهم، تاركاً أمه للمرض واخته للفراغ والحيرة والقلق والتفكير فى الالتحاق بالدير، وهو ما فعلته بعد ذلك، وتطول رحلة الفتى الذى يصادف المغامرات البحرية وأهوال الحرب العالمية التى انخرط بسببها متطوعاً فى صفوف الجيش الفرنسى وكاد أن يلقى حتفه، ويصل إلى موقع الكنز المزعوم، ولكنه لا يجد شيئآ، كل ما يجده أو يعثر عليه، غجرية من لابسات الخيش يحبها وتحبه، وأخيرآ يقرر العودة إلى موطنه بعد أن يئس من الوصول إلى الكنز أو الوهم، كما كانت تسميه أخته وكذلك حبيبته، وربما كان الكنز الحقيقى الذى سيحظى به البطل هو مغامرة حياته نفسها وامتزاجه بالفلك والنجوم السماء والبحر والجبال والطيور والأشجار والأجناس البشرية المختلفة وحتى بأسلحة الجيوش والآت ومعدات الحروب، ربما كان كنزه الحقيقى اكتشافه لنفسه.
