تدريس الناقدة الأدبية "هند الشويخ بن صالح" في هذا الكتاب الإبداع الأدبي نتيجة التجديد في الشعر العربي إبان القرن الثاني المنصرم، وذلك الزمن الذي يتداخل فيه الفني بالحضاري وبالاجتماعي. فبرزت أسماء شعراء ثلاثة حملوا لواء التجديد في الشعر منها بشار بن برد وأبو نواس وأبو العتاهية، فركزت الكاتبة على استقلال المواضيع التي تناولوها سواء كان الغزل أو الخمر أو الزهد، فأضاءت على الصلة بين التجدد الحضاري في المجتمع العربي الإسلامي والتجدد الفني في الشعر دونما قطع مع شعر الجاهليين وانتهت إلى ما جد على أيدي هؤلاء الشعراء من جعل الشعر لسان حال المشاعر والرؤى والهواجس التي تسكن قائلها وكل مستمع قعدت به اللغة عن التعبير.
هذا وقد بوبت الكاتبة الدراسة إلى ثلاثة أبواب: باب أول: جاء في شعر الغزل عند بشار مظاهر التجديد، ودرست فيه الغزل قبل بشار: في الجاهلية -الغزل في القرن الأول للهجرة- ثم الغزل عند بشار: المعاني الغزلية وصورها -بنية القصيدة الغزلية، ثم الفن الشعري في الغزلية.
باب ثاني: جاء في شعر الخمر عند أبي نواس -مظاهر التجديد، ودرست فيه شعر الخمرة في الشعر الجاهلي، صدر الإسلام، وفي القرن الثاني. ثم أوردت مبحثاً في التجديد في الخمرية والفن الشعري في الخمرية التجديد في البنية، الصورة الشعرية، الإيقاع.
باب ثالث: جاء في شعر الزهد عند أبي العتاهية، مظاهر التجديد، ودرست فيه معنى الزهد والحكمة في الجاهلية، صدر الإسلام، وفي القرن الثاني. ثم أوردت مبحثاً في المعاني الزهدية، معنى الأمل واليأس، التوحيد، البعث والآخرة، الدنيا، حتمية الموت، معنى التوكل، الرزق، الكسب. وأخيراً الفن الشعري في الزهدية: التجديد في بنية الزهدية، الصورة الشعرية في الزهدية، اللغة والأسلوب في الزهدية.
