لمّا كانت «الورقات» لأبي المعالي الجُويني إمام الحرمين (ت478هـ)، من أهمِّ المتون في أصول الفقه، وتعدّدتْ شروحُها ما بينَ مُسهبٍ مملٍّ ومُوجِز مُخلٍّ، فقد ارتأى الإمام أبو عبد الله الحطّاب الرُّعيني المالكي (ت954هـ)، أنْ يشرحها شرحاً سهلاً واضحاً، متكئاً في ذلك على شرح الجلال المحلِّي (ت864هـ)، الذي استعصتْ بعضُ ألفاظه وعباراته وألغزتْ على الطّلبة. وعلى الرّغم من تعدُّد نشرات الكتاب، إلا أنّ المحقِّق قد اعتمد في تحقيقهِ على ثلاث نسخٍ خطِّية عتيقة، الأولى: بخطِّ الإمام برهان الدِّين اللقاني (ت1041هـ)، كُتبتْ سنة (993هـ)، والثانية: كتبت سنة (953هـ)، ومنقولة عن مبيّضة المؤلِّف التي عليها خطُّه، والثالثة: كتبتْ بخطٍّ مغربي، يُرجّح أنها شديدة القرب من المؤلِّف، لاكتمال نصِّها وصحّته، وهذا بدورهِ جعلَ هذه الطّبعة تشتملُ على زياداتٍ وتصحيحات لم ترد في النشرات السّابقة.
